Debate on the merits of the Scarborough Subway Extension

I don't think it would be faster and more convenient at all.

Subways are great in dense urban environments, but I'd much rather take a GO Train from Pickering.

A 1.5 - 2 hour subway ride doesn't sound terribly appealing.

I brought up the subway to Pickering “idea” to highlight a stupid idea that specific people may appreciate (like Doug Ford) but people with any sense at all will not. Just like a one-stop subway to an area of the city without the ridership, density, or appropriate built form is.

I wasn’t defending a subway to Pickering in any way.

I think you have a problem with the people of Pickering being treated like first class citizens!

The people of Pickering have been marginalized by the latte-sipping Downtown Toronto Star Media Elites for decades. It's about time Pickering got some Respect. A one-stop subway subway subway would do nicely.

How provincial of you Old Chap!

Whitby also needs a one stop railway, and here's what I propose:
Whitby and Pickering Railway
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitby_and_Pickering_Railway

One stop each end. Studies have shown (once Leftie/Commie/Socialists are eliminated) (and latte drinkers) that in fact, a *two stop* service is far more effective, as with one stop, they get on and off at the same place. Most disconcerting! It also necessitates building the line in a loop, and drivers are afflicted with severe cases of vertigo as a result. Plus they walk with a defined tilt to the Right.

So I say "Two Stop" or bust!

Addendum: OK, OK...I'm getting flak from 'second class citizens' so an adjustment has been made. Here's the updated proposal:
Scarborough and Whitby Railway - Wikipedia

And three stops it shall be!

Neither does an hour commute on the bus to one's nearest subway followed by almost another hour's ride on the subway. SSE could save 20 minutes on average commuting time on a bus/RT to connect to Kennedy and points beyond. We're transforming lives.

The total travel time from Malvern Town Centre to Yonge Station right now is 1 hour and 5 minutes.

From Morningside & Old Finch, it's 1 hour and 13 minutes.

From Kipling and Finch, it's 1 hour and 5 minutes.

Your post is total BS.

Meanwhile real hispter-ville Liberty Village/WQW can't even get a RER stop built yet.

This really this had nothing to do with Scarborough transit, although politicians in this riding and near by areas have wasted time fighting against Scarborough councillors on their own issues which has certainly taken attention and opportunity away from advocating with focus on their own needs. Hopefully we can soon build transit the hipsters deserve once we move on.

Total time from Malvern Town Centre to Union by TTC: 1 h 21 min.
Total time from Kipling & Finch to Union by TTC: 1 h 06 min.

"Syn"s post is total BS.

Exactly! Citing trip planners won't help win him/her/it any arguments when if by happenstance one misses their connecting bus, it's compounding the length of time of the total commute. 90 minutes or sometimes even longer from Morningside Hts to downtown doesn't sound uncommon or unlikely a scenario to me at all.

Getting from Malvern Town Centre to Yonge Station requires a grand total of one bus (along with a subway ride).

Traveling from Morningside & Old Finch to Yonge & Bloor also only requires one bus. There are two options, both of which go directly to a subway station.

Again, your post is total nonsense.

This is why so many can't take the SSE lobby seriously - the 'justifications' peddled are based on fiction, fiction that completely ignores the experience and needs of others. Facts are few and far between.

Personal responsibility plays a role in using public transit. If someone misses their bus, they need to be accountable for that. It's not hard to find schedules online, nor is it difficult for anyone with a smartphone to download an app which will show them where their bus is, in real time. The same is true for anyone, anywhere in the city.

Finally, the SSE will not change the fact that a bus ride will be necessary. In fact, the elimination of rapid transit stops will dramatically increase the reliance on the bus, and actually makes for a longer subway transfer.

If you take those options, expect to spend over 1.5 hrs getting to your destination. I’ve taken 2 hrs from Morningside Heights to Union. This is what gets annoying. And why I remain steadfast that suburban rail is really needed in the GTA.

And it’s hard to take LRT proponents seriously when their entire knowledge of our commutes is based off trip planners and Google maps which somehow never works out quite as well IRL.
