City orders condo developers to buy annual metropass for every unit

in rush hour, a fare between $3 and $3.25, in the off peak, under $3.

Are you unaware of the dangers of exceeding safe capacity? Of course, the ultimate goal is to increase over all capacity, but you don't do that by creating a health and safety hazard.

Think about it, if TTC lowered the cash fare to 10 cents tomorrow, can you not predict what problems it will cause?

All these are terrible ideas.

the best way to increase ridership is to increase FAST, Convinient service.

As our current TTC infrastructure stands, it's only convinient and fas when you're only travelling from one subway station to another. Have any of you tried to take the queen street car? It takes apporx 35-40 minutes during rush hour to take it from jarvis to Strachan. It takes approx 45 minutes to walk, or 15-20 minutes to bike.

They should have NOT extended the yonge subway line up north. If anything, they should have extended Go transit service, to union.

This is ultimately just another 'tax', to ensure guaranteed revenue
for a really inefficiently run system. They say the TTC has the highest recouping cost in any of the North american public transit systems... yet they still can't manage to operate them successfully.

On a side note, have you ever seen a TTC 'fender bender'? Last one i witnessed, 2 supervisors and 1 'CHIEF' supervisor had to show up to figure things out.

if at all possible, use Dundas or King streetcar instead.

Socialist

Maybe we should just tell people where to work and how to get there too. It would be much more efficient.

Why does a developer have to be responsible for traffic in the city? My lawyer didn't give me a metropass when I bought my last home.

I say, raise the price of gas to reflect the damage it does to our environment and our city's traffic problems will sort themself out naturally.

People should have a choice to drive, walk or take the ttc.

The city never said anything about taking away your choice to drive, walk, or take the TTC. Fear of "socialism" much?

Yes they are, that is what this post is all about. The city is saying to the developer "push TTC or no building". Is that a choice?

I have worked with developments along Bloor and believe me, the City does not need to make a policy just so developers promote the benifits of the TTC or accessibility.

But to force a private company to give out coupons for the bus is ridiculous.

Moscoe is totally bizarre. I think there are a lot of better ways to push a scheme like this. What about forcing (or incentivizing) all businesses on major transit lines to provide Metropasses for their employees? That makes way more sense.

The city already forces developers to put parking spaces in. This is just leveling the playing field isn't it? lol

There are already an estimated 35,000 to 40,000 condos under construction in Toronto for completion in 2010/2011, Nice chunk of cash, aprox. 50 million bucks of found money.

Mr. Moscoe the TTC and City Council keep changing the clothes on this transit corpse. We need more subway lines downtown. Build them and the riders will come. End of discussion. Streetcars are quaint but inefficient in so many ways. And whatever happened to those nifty trolly buses, like the ones that used to run on Bay Street. They were quiet, electric, maneuverable, and didn't require tracks that the TTC needs to maintain. And what about a modern ticket system so we don't have to pay someone $80,000 to sit in a little glass booth and make change all day. What about instituting a pay by zone system? No vision, no ideas, no nothing.
We need to START with more subway lines downtown not with gimmicks.

I have to say, I can't stand taking the ttc..you're packed in there like a bunch of sardines. during rush hour it's horrendous. I would bike/drive anyday, any whether before ttc.

No kidding, to many deadbeat politicians sat on it for to long. Lets not even mention Asia and Europe now South American cities are outgunning us when it comes to underground transportation, we want cars of the road, but then again dont have the infastructure to handle the access crowd, what a joke.

My favourite part is: "The policy states the cost of the metropasses cannot be passed on to the condo buyer".

Right, you think at the end of the day tridel is paying for this?

All in all, I think it's a dumb policy (wasn't walking supposed to be better than taking transit?) but it's better than the green roofs policy.

If they combined this with massive reductions in parking requirements for areas with good transit then I'd be all for it (as would many developers). At the end of the day a devloper taking a $20,000 hit on selling a parking space is far more costly than $1,000 for a metropass.
