If a language is displaced by another, words needed for that culture get absorbed into the language - and you have a slightly different dialect.
As far as languages developed over tens of thousands of years - I see no modern equivalent of stone or cave painting writing in modern languages
Old English is not the same language as English (and even English which is considered dominant is not that old). If we had the mentality that languages must be protected - almost no-one would be speaking English
Languages live and grow and eventually die. Language is used to communicate and if you cannot use it to communicate with very many people or people that are not important to you - then it is useless.
