Amid the anticipation of the Eglinton Line 5 Crosstown LRT opening in the near future, Midtown Toronto's Yonge and Eglinton intersection is about to become one of the city's best connected transit hubs. Nearby, the aptly named Line 5 Condos have been rising. Designed by Arcadis for Reserve Properties and Westdale Properties, these 38- and 39-storey towers are situated at 117 Broadway Avenue, west of Redpath Avenue.
When UrbanToronto last looked at the development in September 2021, tower cranes had just been erected, and the lower levels were taking shape.
This southwest-facing view in May, 2022 captures the project reaching grade. The structural bones of the building's foundation are now visible, with concrete footings, plywood, and wooden formwork laid out in a grid that will support the vertical ascent. An array of rebar — which will be encased in concrete to form the skeleton of the towers — marks the site. Two tower cranes stand tall amidst the construction.
Captured from above in August, 2022, this expansive aerial shot features the multiple projects from Reserve Properties and Westdale Properties in the area, all designed by Arcadis: Line 5 Condos are to the left of centre, with the three cranes of 100 Broadway Avenue and Untitled Toronto to the right. Line 5 construction started first, with multiple floors of underground parking then established, and the podium levels beginning to form, while Untitled and 100 Broadway are at their lowest underground level.
In April, 2023, this southeast perspective captures the north tower rising in the foreground and the south tower rising behind it. Both are several floors above grade, with the north tower having its seventh storey formed. Just above it, the tower crane is hoisting a bucket for a concrete pour. Meanwhile, the installation of cladding and windows can be seen along the lower levels of the south tower.
By September, 2023, the towers present a more complete form looking northwest. Cladding has made significant headway, especially on the south tower where the glass and steel climbs more than halfway up the tower. The north tower follows suit, with its cladding trailing several floors behind.
This northeast-facing view focuses on the south tower in October, 2023, with cladding about two-thirds of the way up, while the alternating balcony edges now add a rhythmic visual interest. The podium levels are also clearly discernible.
Looking west to the site in February, 2024, the south tower stands basically topped off, with the north tower a few storeys behind. They will reach final heights of 106.07m and 113.99m respectively.
A southeastward view of the north tower's podium highlights the architectural homage to the area's mid-century aesthetic, merged with modern design elements. The building's balconies present a striking feature, alternating their projections with each floor to create a visual 'zipper' effect. This is accentuated by the balcony guards, where clear glass for unobstructed views is interspersed with sections of black perforated metal, enhancing the building's unique facade when viewed from varying angles.
Line 5 Condos will bring a combined total of 1,010 residential units, just a 13-minute walk away from Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue.
