Nestled on the edge of the East Don Parkland in North York, The Residences at Central Park from Amexon unfolds as a meticulously planned 12-acre community — and one that has taken this year's OHBA's People's Choice Award for Project of the Year. Located where Sheppard Avenue intersects with Leslie Street, the community will offer a harmonious blend of urban living and natural charm. Having bested over 600 submission from across the province, Amexon's Executive Sales Manager, Jason Shiff stated "We are so honoured to have won this distinguished award and extend our thanks to a talented consulting team including CORE Architects Inc. and II BY IV Design."
Since our last costruction update in July, progress has been made on the early stages of excavation. Just in time to take in these early stages, our drone recently returned to the site to provide an invaluable bird's-eye perspective through sweeping aerial shots, capturing the development’s evolving footprint. Venturing into the site, we hover overhead to see the foundational phases of excavation in full swing. The centre of the site displays tell-tale marks of vehicular activity, contrasting with the flat ground surrounding it. Multiple red excavators hint at the pace of digging, while to our right, a green shoring rig stands out with its elongated arm and drilling apparatus poised to create the first piles for shoring walls. In addition, scattered across the site are hollow steel tubes, awaiting use in creating piles for the shoring.
The drone pans to a distinct mound of excavated soil visible on the site's southern end. Meanwhile, the project's perimeter, fortified by hoarding, ensures site privacy and safety, while additional machinery in the southeast corner indicates more excavation activity.
Shifting our attention to the site's southwestern edge, it is the white-hued Central Park sales office that takes centre stage with its modern design, punctuated by expansive glass panels framed in white, offering a harmonious blend of urban innovation amidst nature's embrace. The building is another OHBA award winner, taking the prize for best New Home Sales Office. Built as a permanent structure, the stunning 10,000 ft² structure will become an event venue in the future, but it's GO Transit’s Richmond Hill line running behind it and along the western border of the site that will play a major role in daily life here.
Serving as a vital transportation artery, the line will soon further enhance connectivity through the anticipated relocation of Oriole Station, from under the 401 to a new location at Shepard Avenue and connected to Leslie subway station. Thanks to this move, residents of Central Park will find unmatched connectivity right at their doorstep.
Looking north over the excavation, the established neighbouring structures rise in the distance beyond Central Park's soon-to-be-rehabbed office buildings, surrounded by lush greenery, hinting at the fusion of urban and nature that the development will bring.
With the initiation of excavation, the next phases promise a shift to deeper below grade and eventually vertical progressions. With each phase of construction, The Residences at Central Park will move closer to realizing Amexon's vision of a mixed-use master-planned community. The site will feature five buildings ranging from 12 to 31 storeys, set to provide 1,478 residential units on the edge of the East Don Parkland.
