Just to the east of the Harbour, Toronto's Port Lands are undergoing a major transformation. With much of their industrial land on its way to becoming residential and recreational spaces, the Polson Slip, where lake freighters used to pull up to unload their cargo, is losing its original dock wall in favour of a more naturally curvy shoreline. One of the former standouts of the port will remain a standout of the new Promontory Park that will occupy the site — the 1961-built, 300-ton Atlas crane that towers over its surroundings. In this recent image by UrbanToronto Forum contributor ADRM taken from the new Cherry Street bridge, the Atlas crane, like a sentinel left to stand guard over the area, creates its own local skyline in front of Downtown Toronto's more iconic one.
