Hot on the heels of a successful launch in February, Madison Group celebrated the ceremonial groundbreaking of one of their Downtown Toronto projects, the 45-storey mixed-use residential tower, Alias. The event was held late last month on the development site located at 120 Church Street, and brought together some of the project's contributors, from both the development side and the design side, on one stage to honour the planning that is now accomplished, and the next stage in bringing the Alias to life now officially underway.

Located on the southwest corner of Church and Richmond Streets, the development enjoys a stylish and integrated urban position in Old Toronto, an intriguing area where a well crafted new building could emerge as the newest beacon in the expanding Toronto Skyline. Designed by Teeple Architects and Turner Fleischer Architects, with interior design responsibilities in the hands of Studio Munge, the project hopes to channel its heavy hitting design team to do just that.

The event also saw the project’s lead architect and founding principal of Teeple Architects, Stephen Teeple, take the stage to speak about the design in his own words. Marvelling at the opportunity to create a new building of this scale in Toronto’s oldest neighbourhood, Teeple noted how stylistic elements like the glazed black brick, the building’s soft corners, and the shimmering gold crown that tops the building off will all work together to make the Alias an exciting and identifiable new member to the Skyline.

Demolition began on the site last November, and saw the hasty deconstruction of the existing 3-storey building occupied by a nightclub, as well as the removal of the asphalt that made up a surface parking lot. Interestingly, a building in the northeast corner of the site, which has hosted McVeigh’s Irish Pub for the last six decades, was preserved, and will remain unaltered as the development proceeds. Nearly a year later, construction work is in full swing, as a photo captured last week by UT Forum contributor Benito shows two shoring rigs and a cement truck operating on site.

Upon completion, Alias will climb to a height of 150m, while offering a total of 546 units consisting of a selection of single to three-bedroom units. The development will inject 7,000 ft² of retail units at grade, with well placed frontages along Richmond and Church Streets, and intends to satisfy the community needs of residents with 18,000 ft² of amenity space, as well as a new public park.
