Since June, construction progress on the Oscar Residences has brought the project out of the basement and into the light of day, as forming of the condo's grade level advances. The 9-storey mid-rise is located at 500 Dupont Street just west of Bathurst, along the northern edge of Seaton Village, one of Toronto’s most desirable residential neighbourhoods. From Lifetime Developments, Oscar is one of seven similarly scaled recent projects — planned or completed — on the 3km stretch of Dupont Street between Ossington Avenue and Spadina Road, and will soon open its doors to welcome the urbanization of the once industrial strip bound by the railway tracks.

With the single level of underground parking completed, forming has moved above ground. The design, by Turner Fleischer Architects, utilizes a three-storey base building with near total site coverage to frame the mid-rise levels above, which steps back from the base at the north and south elevations, taking on a C-shaped massing facing south. The primary frontage along Dupont Street is characterized by a double height window wall, built to house at grade retail, a presence that is generally lacking in the immediate vicinity.

An image of the site by UT Forum contributor AlbertC, captured on September 19th, shows us the skeleton of what we see on the ground level in the renderings. The floor-plate for the first level has been poured in its entirety, and work is now being focussed on creating concrete forms for the structural columns that will support the subsequent levels. A number of the double-height columns have been poured to completion, but piles of rebar in the foreground indicate there is still a significant amount of forming to be done on the west side of the first storey.

AlbertC returned to the site yesterday to capture a new set of photos, this time taking us around to the east elevation, where a new form has been constructed in preparation for the second storey. Piles of materials are resting on the elevated form, and temporary columns are in place to support the impending section of floor-plate. In the left segment of the image, we can see that the form ends about midway to the western edge, where columns are still being completed.

Oscar Residences will eventually contain an exclusive 155 residential units, boasting a boutique interior style by Mason Studio that captures the essence of the transition the neighbourhood is experiencing, from industrial to contemporary, with a splash of the high-end character from red carpet celebrity photography by Toronto's George Pimentel. With the promise of more development in every direction, Lifetime intends that Oscar's purposeful design and style will make it stand out.

UrbanToronto will continue to follow progress on this development, but in the meantime, you can learn more about it from our Database file, linked below. If you'd like, you can join in on the conversation in the associated Project Forum thread or leave a comment in the space provided on this page.
