Just around the corner from Toronto City Hall, the new Ontario Court of Justice is nearly fully-clad, with curtain wall having been applied to the majority of its exterior since our last check-in on the project back in January of 2021; the only glazing that is left to be installed is where the construction hoist ran up the exterior of the building, as seen to the left in the image below.
Designed by world-renowned Genoa-based architects Renzo Piano Building Workshop working with Toronto-based NORR Architects, the project's detail-oriented design features a custom unitized curtainwall glazing system, which has now almost been fully applied. It has several components, including double-glazed, low-iron vision glass, corrugated sheet metal shadowbox panels, powder-coated aluminum mullions, and rounded corners formed by a free edge of glazing enclosed by an aluminum C-profile.
Our last update shared that the building was about to top off at its final height of 17 storeys, with the application of its glass-cladding just beginning. The building has come a long way since then, with its base level the last area to see cladding work applied ahead of the sidewalk being freshened up.
The canopy above the four-storey-high entry plaza area, as seen below, remains to have its soffits installed. Crews are still working to finish this portion of the building with a brushed aluminum.
A number of currently used court offices scattered around Toronto are being consolidated at this location, which was originally anticipated to wrap up construction this Spring. Opening dates have yet to be announced, however. Once open, the new court building will house 63 courtrooms including a multiple accused, high-security courtroom, and 10 conference/settlement rooms.
