With increasing GO Train service and the upcoming Mount Dennis Crosstown station, Toronto's Weston area has become another hot spot for development proposals. At 1552 Weston Road on the northwest corner with Edmund Avenue, Mahogany Management has recently submitted a Site Plan Application to the City of Toronto, proposing an 8-storey, 50-unit affordable residential building designed by McKnight Charron Limited Architects.

The proposed building is part of the City's Open Door affordable housing program, which is designed to assist the City in achieving the goals of its Housing TO 2020-2030 Action Plan, with its target of 40,000 new affordable rental homes and 4,000 new affordable ownership homes by 2030.
The property is currently occupied by a two-story building which houses 30 affordable housing units, and a surface parking lot. The proposed building would be located where the surface parking is. The proposal includes maintaining the existing building while modifying its south wall in order to provide a connection at the first floor and between the new building's third floor, and the existing building's roof to allow for the residents of both buildings to make use of a new amenity area atop the existing building's roof.

The proposed building has a total gross floor area of 3,177m² with a proposed density of 1.56 FSI. There would be a total of 267m² of amenity space provided, with 98m² being indoor and 169m² being outdoor.
50 additional residential units would be added within the new building, consisting of 14 studios (24%), six of which would be barrier free, and 36 one-bedrooms (76%), 22 of which would be barrier free. Barrier free units are those which have, for example, wider than normal doors, so that those who use wheelchairs and other accessibility devices can move through them easily, along with other accommodations.
The proposal includes nine at-grade parking spots, one of which would be reserved for visitors. Access to the parking lot would be from Edmund Street.
