Construction is moving right along at Westbank Corp and Allied Properties REIT's project at 19 Duncan Street. The development is bringing a mix of uses including office, restaurant, residential rental, and hotel space to the southeast corner of Duncan and Adelaide streets in Toronto's Entertainment District. The Hariri Pontarini Architects-designed tower will rise 58 storeys, one of the first buildings in the area to surpass its largely uniform skyline height where most buildings rise about 47 storeys.
The base of the building will feature the preserved north and west facades of the 1908-built Southam Press Building, with the complex's heritage preservation overseen by ERA Architects. Upon our last update in June, the seventh floor of the building's podium had been formed, and could be seen rising above the heritage facades. Now, construction has continued upwards, and the tenth floor is in the process of being formed.
Glazing has also begun to be installed on the lower levels of the building, with curtain wall being affixed to nearly the entire exterior of the base of the building, and the first level of the podium. White fins separate each window, an act as brise soleils to cut down on heat transference, improving the thermal performance of the building.
The podium floors are destined to become the new Toronto home of news media giant Thomson Reuters. The levels that rise above it will mainly consist of purpose-built rental units, with the exception of levels 52 through 55 which will be reserved for a collection of 40 hotel suites. Some retail/restaurant space will be found at ground level.
