Nearly four months after its ground floor was laid in Downtown Toronto, above grade construction of SickKids Hospital's new Patient Support Centre (PSC) at 175 Elizabeth Street has taken off. The 22-storey building designed by B+H Architects has been under construction since its October, 2019 ground breaking, and now sits four storeys above grade.
Towards the end of March, a second crane was installed at the site, and concrete and steel began to rise above grade. In April, forms for walls and columns for the ground floor and for the level two concrete slab were also being erected.
Since then, the concrete floor plates of four levels above grade have been completed, including temporary shoring.
The new structure stands on what was the former site of the Elizabeth McMaster building, a Postmodern 8-storey laboratory and administrative centre that was built in the mid-1980s. In Spring, 2019 crews from the PCL and Priestly Demolition began demolition of the building in anticipation of the construction of the PSC.
With construction well underway, the Patient Support Centre is anticipated to open as early as the fourth quarter of 2022.
We will keep you posted as SickKids' Patient Support Centre works its way through construction, but in the meantime, additional information and images can be found in our Database file for the project, linked below.
