This week's Throwback Thursday takes us to the Queens Quay and York intersection in Toronto's Harbourfront area, comparing a pair of photos captured almost five years apart. Back in November of 2016, construction was in the late stages for the Sun Life Financial Tower & Harbour Plaza Residences complex, its 35-storey office tower at 1 York Street having been recently completed, and its 63- and 67-storey condo towers then in the process of topping out. At the far left, the Ten York condominium tower was quickly rising towards a height of 65 storeys.
Approaching five years later, and this view of the South Core skyline has changed even more with new additions. The Harbour Plaza Residences condominium towers—now perfectly framed by the Sun Life Financial Tower and the 2014-completed RBC WaterPark Place III—opened in 2017, with Ten York following suit in 2018. Another office tower recently joined the mix with the 32-storey 16 York, completed in 2020. In the right background, a crane can be seen along with the uppermost floors of the rising The Prestige at Pinnacle One Yonge. The first phase in this complex is now being followed by the much taller Skytower, the tallest building under construction in Canada, to dominate the right side of this view in the coming years.
We will return next week with another look at the changing face of Toronto. In the meantime, you can submit your own Throwback Thursday comparisons in our dedicated Forum thread for your chance to be featured in next week's edition.
