Toronto's hip West Queen West area is getting a new western bookend, as work advances on a new condominium development at the southeast corner of Queen and Sudbury streets, on the former site of the Gladstone Cafe. The 15-storey, Quadrangle-designed condominium at 1181 Queen Street West from Skale Developments has been under construction for approximately 16 months now, with an important milestone now fast approaching.

Work on 1181 Queen West kicked off with demolition in June, 2019, paving the way for the start of shoring work the following month. Excavation began last fall, digging down to a depth of three storeys to make way for the project's underground components, including foundations and a parking garage. Excavation activity continued into the early months of 2020, culminating in the installation of a tower crane this past May. With the crane in place, work began on forming the three underground levels, a task which has been steadily progressing, and expected to conclude in the coming weeks.

Earlier this month, crews began to form the garage's P1 level, marking the final underground floor before the new building begins its above-grade rise. Photos captured in the past couple of weeks show P1 walls and columns now sitting just below street level.

1181 Queen West will feature a wedge-shaped, terraced design that responds to its triangular site, and its base designed to complement the surrounding low-rise heritage context along Queen Street West, stepping back to meet the heights of taller buildings to the south. Cladding includes a mix of white brick, stone, aluminum, and concrete by which the tower stand apart from its darker-toned neighbours.
