A few blocks east of St. Lawrence Market in Toronto, the intersection of Sherbourne and Front streets is getting a big boost in residential density with two condominium complexes under construction on opposing corners. At the southeast corner, Pemberton Group's Time and Space development reached a construction milestone this week, with the fourth tower crane installed at the expansive site of the Wallman Architects-designed complex that will rise as high as 29 storeys and span a full city block.
Following site clearance that stretched from April through June, 2018, construction began in August of that year with shoring work. Almost two years later, the site's excavation and foundation work have been completed, much of the one-level of underground parking garage has been formed, and the first ground-floor columns have recently been put in place at the site's north end along Front Street East. (More parking levels will be coming above ground, hidden from the street by encircling condo suites.) Work lags behind at the site's southeast corner, with this week's installation of a tower crane there set to accelerate forming on this quadrant.
The crane installation was carried out on Tuesday, requiring a full 12-hour road closure along Princess Street to accommodate a mobile hydraulic crane. The mobile crane was used to hoist individual sections of the fourth tower crane into position, where they were then bolted into place by crews safely tied off to arresting gear. UrbanToronto Forum contributor evandyk, who has a south-facing perch overlooking the build site, captured a series of images showing the crane sections being raised and fastened.
The latest crane installation, combined with the two more cranes already working away on St Lawrence Condos at the intersection's northwest corner, adds up to six cranes now towering over Sherbourne and Front.
Once complete, the complex's 18 and 29-storey volumes will bring almost 1,600 units combined to the St. Lawrence neighbourhood, along with new retail space along Front Street East.
