Thirteen months have elapsed since drilling rigs kicked off construction of the Theatre District Residence and RIU Plaza Hotel complex, a pair of Quadrangle-designed 48 and 49-storey towers that will bring new condominium residences and the first Canadian RIU Plaza Hotel to Widmer and Adelaide in Toronto's Entertainment District. In the time since Plaza began construction on the complex, we've seen shoring and excavation followed by the start of underground forming earlier this year.

A single crane stood over the site when we last checked in on construction in February, when crews had just commenced pouring the first concrete for the complex's foundations and lowest of the building's four underground garage floors. In the two months since, a second crane has been erected at the south end of the pit, and work has advanced considerably.

Structural elements are now present across much of the site footprint, other than the area around the south crane where excavation was still drawing to a close when we last visited two months ago. Over the coming months, another three parking levels will follow for the 179-space garage, with 121 parking spots for condo residents and 58 spots split between visitors and hotel guests.

Once the garage levels are complete, work will move on to podium levels and then the towers. A row of Victorian townhomes on Widmer Street are also to be restored and incorporated into the complex. Once complete, the complex's south tower will house  424 condominium units, while the north tower—marketed as Encore at Theatre District—will include the the 353-room RIU Plaza Hotel on its first 23 floors, and an additional 131 condo units in the upper 25 levels. The towers will both rise 156 metres tall.
