A distinctly suburban block of Bathurst Street in Thornhill is set to get an urban makeover as part of The Daniels Corporation and Baif Developments’ upcoming condominium complex known as The Thornhill. Planned at the northwest corner of Beverley Glen Boulevard, a short distance north of the Bathurst and Centre Street intersection, the four-building, Kirkor Architects-designed complex will come with an animated, pedestrian-friendly expansion of the existing public realm that will set a standard for future developments in the area.

A site plan for the complex shows the first phase’s positioning alongside Bathurst Street, with the top-down view revealing a generous public realm complete with street trees lining the site’s Bathurst frontage. The first phase of the community will also act as a foothold for retail on the block, with retail space along Bathurst to the north of the lobby entrance, which will animate the block with foot traffic.

A rendering of the first phase’s primary residential entrance shows how planters, bicycle lockups, and street-fronting retail would create urban conditions that would be right at home in Downtown Toronto. The development's gymnasium and basketball court is also clearly visible through large expanses of glazing, putting another spin on Jane Jacobs’ "Eyes on Street" maxim of good urban planning into effect here.

The 25-storey first phase—the first of four buildings—will bring an initial 313 condominium units to the block, to be followed by additional phases to the south and west.
