Over a year and a half has passed since Robert De Niro was on hand for the ground breaking for Nobu Residences Toronto, and since then construction of the new complex from Madison Group and Westdale Properties has been progressing on Mercer Street in Toronto's Entertainment District. Earlier this month, the first tower crane was installed in the base of the site's excavated pit, marking the start of forming for the paired 45-storey, Teeple Architects-designed towers.
The crane installation took place on January 4th, requiring a closure of Mercer Street while the heavy crane components were hoisted from flatbed trucks via a mobile crane, and bolted into place at the east end of the site. Crane parts were assembled through the evening hours and into the night, with the crane going operational shortly after.
Forum contributor westtoeast had a great view of the operation, captured from the podium of The Mercer Condominiums just north of the Nobu site. A pair of time lapse videos captured during the crane installation show how the mobile crane was used to lift individual crane parts into place.
Meanwhile, with the east crane now in place, crews continue to excavate the west end of the site. In contrast to the bottomed-out excavation at the east end of the site, the west end currently sits just a few feet below grade, with a horizontal drilling rig now installing the west end's first row of tiebacks. A second crane will eventually be installed at the west end of the site.
Once construction wraps up a couple years down the line, the twin 45-storey towers will bring a combined 660 condominium units to the Entertainment District, along with 36 ultra luxury hotel units in the new Nobu Hotel Toronto.
