A single tower's ascent shakes up the power balance in the northward view from Yonge and Bloor in the heart of Toronto in this week's Throwback Thursday. Comparing views captured 22 months apart, we start in February, 2018, when Bazis and Plaza's 1 Yorkville was early into its rise above Yonge Street, with the Roy Varacalli-designed condominium tower then standing 8 storeys from its frontage of preserved Victorian storefronts, on its way to an eventual height of 58 storeys. At the time, the 2008-built, 36-storey 18 Yorkville Condos dominated the view.
The same view captured days ago shows the tower now topped out at a final height of 183 metres, clad in a skin of textured metallic grey aluminum fins. 18 Yorkville is now dwarfed by its new neighbour. This view is set to change even more in the coming years, as the early stages of construction are already underway for the 51-storey Eight Cumberland to the immediate south of 1 Yorkville.
