Several recently built towers south of the Union rail corridor have fundamentally altered the classic postcard view of the Toronto skyline from the Islands—the bank towers of King and Bay no longer dominate—and another multi-tower complex is promising to bring even more change to this view in the coming years. Pinnacle International's Pinnacle One Yonge will bring five Hariri Pontarini Architects-designed towers to the foot of Yonge at Queens Quay, including a 95-storey condo tower set to become one of Canada's tallest buildings once complete. Before the tallest towers rise, the first of the five towers being built is a 65-storey condominium tower dubbed 'The Prestige.'
This initial tower is being built at the east edge of the site, along Freeland Street, and just north of the Toronto Star complex on a former section of the surface parking lot. We last checked in on the project back in December, when a pair of tower cranes had just been installed at the base of the site's excavated pit.
Over seven months of construction later, the site's six-level underground garage has been formed, and the project recently crossed a milestone with the start of work on the tower's ground level. The first sections of the ground floor had been poured by the first week of July, and more recent photos show that the first ground-floor walls and columns have since been poured.
The following few months will see the rise of the building's six-storey podium, before forming moves on to the smaller tower footprint and work speeds up considerably. The tower will eventually rise to a height of 217 metres, or 712 feet. While two of the planned towers are even taller than this initial phase, the towers' position closer to the lake ensures that The Prestige will hold a prominent position on the Toronto skyline for years to come.
