Construction is coming soon at the site of 293 The Kingsway, where the Benvenuto Group is bringing a collection of mid-rise condominium buildings to an area just north of Etobicoke's Humbertown Plaza. Before work on the Quadrangle-designed community can begin, the existing collection of mid-20th century mid-rise apartment buildings on the project site must be removed.

One of these buildings has already been extensively modified; a four-storey apartment building at the southeast corner of The Kingsway and St Steven's Court was converted into a presentation centre for the project last year. The remaining buildings on site have since been vacated in advance of abatement for demolition, which is set to begin next month.

Looking a little the worse for wear, these aging mid-rises offer a window into the past as an early example of multiple unit using in Toronto's suburbs. The best of this bunch feature distinctly 1950s-era designs that incorporate Streamline Moderne and early Modernist influences that include symmetrical designs with glass-block windows and groups of horizontal accents. Many of the buildings' original finishes have been replaced over the years, and changing expectations have affected the viability of the rental units within, priming the site for its redevelopment.

With abatement and demolition to begin within the next few weeks, the team behind the project is expecting a two-year construction period for the first phase 9-storey condominium building, which will bring 350 condominium units to the area.
