Toronto's West Don Lands area has come a long way in just a few short years. A mostly disused former industrial area at the start of the decade, the area near the mouth of the Don River began a repopulation with new homes, businesses, and public spaces when the Pan Am Games came to town. Now, two more developments by DundeeKilmer are taking shape in the area, set to bring a combined 575 condominium units to the area.

Work is furthest along at Canary Block Condos, a 12-storey KPMB Architects-designed condominium on Front Street East, a block west of Bayview. Construction of the project kicked off in late 2017 with the start of shoring work, followed by the excavation and forming of the building's two-level underground garage. By last summer, forming had reached grade and work was starting on the ground floor. When we last checked in at the start of 2019, forming had progressed up to the 10th level.

Now topped out at 12 storeys, installation of exterior finishes has made significant progress. Window wall cladding with dark glazing and gold-coloured mullions encloses much of the building, while similar gold finishes are present along the roofline, and gold-tinted frames create a sawtooth-shaped street frontage at ground level.

A test panel of balcony cladding at the east side of the third floor (above) and the beginnings of underpainting of the balcony slabs hint at the project's final look. Once work here wraps up, the project will introduce 187 new units to the neighbourhood.

Across Front Street to the south, another DundeeKilmer condominium development is now under construction. Designed by architectsAllianceCanary Commons will also rise 12 storeys, and will bring another 388 condominium units to the area. Shoring work on the site started last fall, and excavation is now in full swing.
