Excavation is progressing where the two tallest buildings in Mississauga—a pair of 60-storey Core Architects-designed towers—will soon be under construction at the east end of the 15-acre site at Burnhamthorpe Road and Confederation Parkway. Several months of digging has now formed a pair of large pits for the first phases of the M City community from Rogers Real Estate Development Ltd. and Urban Capital Property Group.
The excavation process here has not been typical for most Toronto digs, as the soil here is a particularly thin layer. With the bedrock located just a few feet underground, less shoring was required here to hold back the surrounding loose soils, but braking up the rock to be hauled away takes more time than just scoping up those soils. A wide open staging area has provided space for a sizeable number of dump trucks to assemble without taking up lanes on the surrounding streets.
Bisecting the pair of pits is where one of the new roads will run that will connect the interior of the community to the existing road network. While the new roadway currently looks like a causeway bordered by cliffs, it will eventually be an urban side street bounded by 'M1' and 'M2' towers and their podiums, and they represent Mississauga's intention to create a more walkable core that has been planned more for the car until recently.
The initial pair of towers at M City will surpass Absolute World's 50- and 56-storey towers as Mississauga's tallest buildings. An even taller third phase will follow. M City will eventually add a total of 10 new towers to the Mississauga skyline once fully realized.
