Situated between two buildings, and with a pedestrian bridge above, the new entrance to a Mississauga college campus is beginning to resemble the ceremonial gates that typically shape the boundaries of older Universities. Yet, the new 'gate' at Sheridan College's Hazel McCallion Campus is shaping up to having a distinct identity of its own, fostering a sense of openness seldom embodied by the imposing wrought-iron structures that create a barrier between 'education' and the outside world.

With a transparent pedestrian overpass presiding over the wide open entryway, the new entrance's iconic bridge will embody connection rather than separation. As part of the 220,000 square foot expansion of the college, the new entrance will provide a focal point to the campus, which first opened in 2011 just to the west of Square One. Designed, built, and financed by the Sheridan Creative Partnership composing of Bondfield Construction Company Limited, Rocklynn Capital Inc., Moriyama + Teshima Architects and Montgomery Sisam Architects, the new addition (Phase II of the campus' construction) is set to re-shape the campus, significantly expanding its size.

Since our last construction update in May, significant progress has been made on the campus' new addition, with administrative and educational buildings rising as the skeleton of the new bridge was hoisted aloft and installed.

New photos —courtesy of UrbanToronto Forum contributor drum118—provide an in-depth look at the erection of the bridge, showing the second truss installed above the campus entrance.

Lifted in one piece by a crane on the ground, the truss was carefully raised to its third storey height, before being bolted in place by construction workers.

The photos also evidence significant construction progress of the new north building (first photos), while showing the opening created in the campus's first building (above and below, left) to allow for the installation of the bridge.

The ongoing expansion will significantly expand the campus' capacity, accommodating 3,200 new full-time students (more than doubling the campus' enrollment) while also providing new space for faculty and administrative offices, alongside studios, labs, and production facilities. Perhaps the highlight of the new amenities, however, will be the interactive learning area known as the 'Creativity Commons,' which will foster collaborative learning and house an art gallery showcasing student innovation.
