It has been a few months since we last checked in on the construction progress of HNR Properties' HNR Dundas Square Tower, rising on Victoria Street, immediately south of Dundas Square. At the time of our last visit, the Diamond Schmitt Architects and Page + Steele / IBI Group Architects-designed rental tower had risen to a height of two storeys. In the time since, work has progressed up to the ninth floor, well on its way towards the building's eventual height of 40 storeys.
The growing rental tower has surpassed the height of the neighbouring Ed Mirvish Theatre to the south (currently wrapped for exterior restoration), and will push above the historic HNR building in the coming months. A large double-height lobby is now apparent along the building's Victoria Street Frontage, which will also contain a retail entrance and a vehicular entrance for the building's five-storey below grade parking garage.
One of the lesser documented projects being constructed in the city centre, HNR Dundas Square Tower will add 245 rental units to Toronto's busiest shopping district. The development, located in close proximity to Ryerson University, will serve the growing student rental market, as well as others looking to live near the bustling hive of activity that is Yonge and Dundas.
Along with the new construction, the project also included the restoration and incorporation of the historic 9-storey Hermant and 15-storey HNR buildings, built in 1912 and 1929 respectively. The lobbies of these restored office buildings also contain retail space.
