One of Toronto's fastest growing skylines is in an area that many would not expect, nestled along the Lake Ontario waterfront area of south Etobicoke, until recently a low-rise motel strip and since renamed 'Humber Bay Shores'.
Westlake Condos by the Onni Group is the latest addition to the burgeoning area. With three towers now on the rise heading to 39, 46, and 48 storeys, and all growing from a central village street lined by retail podiums, the complex will make the greatest contribution yet to the area's transformation from suburban motels and manufacturing and warehousing to a busy new neighbourhood.
Designed by Page + Steele / IBI Group Architects, the complex features dark reflective glass, dark mullions and spandrels, and some silver stripes which are just starting to appear. One of those stripes—an aluminum cladding over a concrete fin—is currently being installed on the southwest side of the tallest of the towers.
Back down at ground level, the view below gives an idea of how the towers meet the Mimico Creek ravine which they border. The closest of the two towers to Lake Shore curves to follow the creek's bend.
The lower two floors along the ravine feature red-brick clad townhomes facing the green space. Give it another month, and you won't be able to see across from the other side due to all the leaves.
Over on the northeast side of the complex where Lake Shore Boulevard meet Park Lawn Road, Westlake presents an urban face. Coming up close to the sidewalk, Westlake will present a number of stores and services for the area's growing population.
The podium will feature a Metro Grocery store, a Shoppers Drug Mart, a TD Bank, and more.
A fourth and final tower is now in the sales stage for the northwest corner of the site, the 45-storey Westlake Encore. It, and the whole complex including the internal street and shops and the residential amenities the buildings will provide, can be seen in the video below.
