Out of the handful of construction sites in the immediate vicinity of the intersection of Yonge and Eglinton, we have been keeping a very close eye on The Berwick and CityTowns, a 17-storey condominium/townhouse development by Andrin Homes and The Brown Group of Companies.
Construction on the Page + Steele / IBI Group Architects-designed development has been moving at a rapid pace over the past several months, with several additional floors being built each month. Since our last visit at the end of September, concrete has risen four floors to the 16th storey, with just one more residential floor remaining before work begins on the mechanical floor above.
With the tower’s final floors coming together, we can now get an inkling of the terraced setbacks which will narrow the building as it climbs, eventually terminating at the mechanical penthouse.
The adjacent multi-level parking garage, which provided an elevated vantage point of the site in the project’s early stages, is now dwarfed by the quickly growing condominium tower. While this vantage point no longer offers us a full aerial view, it will be valuable in getting us right up close to the soon-to-be-installed cladding.
Down at ground level, metal frames are being installed to the exterior in preparation for the coming masonry cladding.
The Berwick’s 205-units aren’t all located in the tower. A three-storey run of townhomes occupies the northern half of the site . The townhomes have risen above grade, with work now underway on the second level’s walls.
Also included in the project's northern portion is the ramp leading to the development’s residential and visitor parking. Though the early stages of the ramp were constructed in a spiral configuration, the ramp has now straightened its path towards the future laneway along the tower’s east side, leading to the project’s namesake, Berwick Avenue.
