Work proceeds on the re-cladding of First Canadian Place. Built in the 1970's, First Canadian Place has long been Canada's tallest building. Designed by Edward Durell Stone, the building is clad in white Carrara marble. The problem is white carrara marble is not suited to our cold climate. So unsuited that in 2007 one of the marble slabs detached from the building and fell down onto a 3 storey podium below. At that point Brookfield Properties, the building's owner, started to replace other slabs that were in danger of falling off. Thus the checkerboard look caused by brand new white slabs being located next to the original, long stained by pollution, darker slabs. In the end Brookfield decide to replace all the slabs, this time however in white fritted glass.
