@Robonto and @Sean_YYZ on Twitter have posted some photos:

Is it just me but is this not the actual SAM The Record Man sign? If the backing was replaced, and the neon bulbs were said to have been replaced, then what's left of the original sign?

Is it just me but is this not the actual SAM The Record Man sign?

From the Globe:

What did the signs look like when you first began your work?
They looked terrible but some parts were in almost perfect condition. The original signs were made from sheet metal, which rusts over time, so much of the signs were rusted beyond repair and were not salvageable.

What does the procedure for the repair of the signs look like?
We just completed the design stage and there has been no major physical work on the signs yet, but the material has been ordered and is expected to come in at any time. We started by refurbishing the "Sam" letters that were removed and creating the neon tubes. We are also replacing all of the white neon tubes because the glass tubing has lead content and so we are replacing all of those with lead-free glass. We will be also replacing the fluorescent lamps with LED lighting.

From across Yonge, the slots for airflow mean that the red and black backing is totally lost. These might work from right below, but from a less acute angle? Doesn't look like they will.

Could they not have built in enough supports so they didn't need the slats? You see billboards on top of buildings all over the city with no issues, I don't see why it should be any different here.
Perhaps using small holes would'e been better to maintaining the red and letting some wind through. The only time this sign will look good across the square is at night now.

Another crazy idea would be to use a "net" of LEDs secured to the accordion frame to simulate a red background while remaining porous enough to avoid heavy wind loads.
