What does the new Council look like?

Making transit an essential service disturbs me. I used to live in Montreal where transit is an essential service. After they made it an essential service, the strikes went from 2-3 day affairs to 4-6 week affairs. I'd rather have a couple of days of no service, than weeks and months of limited service.

Declaring the TTC an essential service would remove the right to strike.
There are numerous things for Rob Ford where he has complete ideological blinders on (private garbage collection, TTC essential service designation) where he approaches issues without considering all sides to an issue and which path is more cost effective.

Essential Service designation seems like it'd have all the heft of giving the key to the city to someone. It's a token gesture. There is literally no chance of a prolonged TTC strike because the province will scramble in (even on a weekend!) to draft back-to-work legislation within 24 hours of a work stoppage. (Likely because, if they didn't, half the staff at Queen's Park wouldn't be able to make it into work.)

Edit: I think the real motivation behind it is that it would mean the government could divorce themselves from the responsibility of publicly negotiating with the transit union.

Declaring the TTC an essential service would remove the right to strike.
That's only an assumption. In most places it only requires them to provide essential services.

And in all cases, it leads to higher contract settlements. I thought Rob Ford was about cutting the Gravy Train - not providing guaranteed wage increases and job security to overpaid TTC ticket attendants.

For the 32 councilors who responded to the survey, I have listed them in order of how closely they follow the "Ford Line" on the 5 questions asked:

Y = Yes, A = Abstain, N = No

And of those *non* respondents, I'd estimate that Grimes is a low net yes to neutral; Perruzza would be midpoint net-no; Colle would be midpoint net-no; Stintz would be low net yes to neutral (or even low new no--hey, if Parker can be); Filion would be low-to-mid net no; Shiner would be mid net yes; Robinson would be low to mid net no; Fletcher would be net no all the way; Thompson would be low to mid mid net yes; Del Grande would be net yes all the way; Kelly would be low to mid net yes; Moeser would be low net yes...
