The project to re-do this park has been in the works for a bit now, and discussed in both the 'King West' and 'Parks New and Revitalized' threads.

As we now have renders for 2 design options, I thought it was time to give this its own spot.

Project Page is here: https://www.toronto.ca/city-governm...t/victoria-memorial-square-park-improvements/

Comments:

- Good material palette

- I'm not entirely sold on covering the old tombstones with the new mounds from a heritage perspective.

- If we're going to go the mound and vegetation route, design one with the flowers is more appealing.

-Design 1 is more functional by better accommodating desire-line movements. A south-east to north-west movement here will occur for people to get from Portland Commons etc over to the Ontario Line station at King/Bathurst.

- I like the idea of the heritage lighting in Design 1 as well; but wish to add the text discusses matching the heritage lighting on Wellington while the render shows a non-matching fixture.

I would like to have seen some discussion about how the changes relate both to the new Wellington bikeway, but also the proposed one on Portland.

That said, based on the above, if I have to choose, design 1 it is.

Having a relatively larger gathering space around the memorial hardly seems like good justification for relocating it.

Ignoring that detail, I still favour design 1 for the point you make about desire-line movements.

My only reservation about the mounding is, this park needs sufficient "throw down a blanket" space - it's very much used as a place to just spread out and park one's self.

Will the mounds and flowering vegetation reduce the usable "floor space", rather than simply protect and demarcate the burial areas?

Any burial area deserves very sensitive treatment. I do wonder if the mounds diminish the burial presence, rather than interpret it.
