VIA Rail

Since they don't have MU cables the second train is dead in tow?

Yes. The brakes are compatible, so the one train can pull the other.

How will they J train two Siemens trains? With one train dead in tow? And what if the first locomotive has an issue? You cannot use it as a cab car. Is that not an issue?

Nobody said that Siemens trains can't MU with each other.... they just can't MU with older trains.

So they need to crash them, determine how to fix them to be stronger, test them and present it within 2 months. I would think that they are closer to figuring out how to fix them at this point. But then again once they understand the weaknesses, computer modelling can tell you what to fix.

The compression test is a well known and longstanding procedure. Basically, you put the trains in a test apparatus (a big vise, in principle) and apply a carefully measured level of force. The frame either distorts, or it doesn't.

I don't know exactly how the teardown test will be performed, but there are well understood ways of looking for cracks in metal.

Those two shrink-wrapped cars that were photographed over the weekend appeared to have had all the underframe equipment removed. One has to think that was preparation for one or the other test, so the frames could be examined more easily.

Why shrink wrap the 2? Are they condemned?

Don't know. Maybe they've started some of the disassembly of those ones, and so needed to keep them watertight for transport.

They have MU plugs - they're just not the same style as the older ones.

But yes, the second train is dead in tow.

Again, they have MU cables and are specifically designed to be able to operate as J-trains.

but it saves time not having to wye it after leaving Montreal.
why would they need to do that they can operate the train from either end? One end is the engine the other is a cab car much like how to go transit and many other trans operate now, there is no need to turn trains around.
