US Midterm Election

Well it is now that time of night where things begin to unfold so how about some predictions?

I don't have the usual access to information so it is not as easy to get a sense of what is going on, but, am I the only one who thinks the Republicans have somehow come through in the eleventh hour?

The Republicans might still keep the Senate but it's all but fact that the Dems will get control of the House of Representatives. This would be the first time in history that an asymmetric change happens. Whenever the House or Senate changes hands, the other follows.

I still have hope that the Democrats will gain full majority of Congress and thus gain the ability to impeach Bush on his lies about the Iraq War, the Guantanamo Bay torture case and the illegal and unconstitutional wiretapping on American citizens without a judge's consent.

Cheney would become President, but that would go a long way to improving American relations with the rest of the world (and increase the IQ of the White House by quite a bit).

... The again, Cheney will inevitably shoot someone again and get impeached also (Today, on election day, he went on his first hunting trip since shooting his buddy in the face).

Well, it doesn't seem that way. Santorum as well as a few other high profile Republicans lost, and the night is still young.

Ding dong the wicked witch is dead...

Metro:

Cheney would do well blowing his brains out with a shotgun. While he's at it, he should take his turncoat faux-lez fifth columnist daughter with him. Charles Heston could watch the whole proceedings and then forget about the whole business in 5 minutes time.

It is looking somewhat positive in the early hours, but, American elections have become increasingly crazy in past years. As you said, the night is young, and who really knows what will happen in the next few hours.

^^ Yes, the Democrats have already won 3 of the 6 they need to take control of the senate. I think history will prove to continue its trend and both the House and the Senate will change hands at the same time.

I don't think it will take long for an impeachment motion to come up.

... I wonder when the US will catch up with the times. I guess that will happen once religion stops playing such a major role. I'm confident it will eventually occur as science continues to replace religion in more educated enclaves of the USA.

Sad but true how prevelant racism is and how little it seems to affect people.

Looks as though the Senate will stay in Republican hands. Lets see how the House turns out now.

Also, the United States is unlikely to shed its religous roots anytime soon. It is heavily integrated into everyday life and it is going to take time, or a somewhat radical social movement, before that will change.

Whoa! Virginia just surged for the Democrats! There was a 40,000 vote gap with advantage to the Republicans. That just dropped to under 10,000 with 3% to go.

Anything can happen now! :D

I'm sure countries like Iran and China will continue to censor the internet. The same option isn't available in the US.

Maybe not through direct censorship but censorship through poverty is working well at the momment. Unfortunately access to technology for those in lower classes is something that there seems to be little desire to address at the momment. But, thats another issue altogether.

On another note, Hilary Clinton will end up with close to 70% of the vote which should put her name high on the list for '08 (and that will no doubt be a completely chaotic election).

The senate results could be one of those all night contests. I am stuck watching a CNN feed but so far they haven't called it for either party yet.

Just an aside, I forgot how painful it can be watching CNN (and I can only imagine what some of the other networks are like) and listening to their idiotic commentary and chatter mixed in with silly graphics.

Missouri Amendment: ALLOW STEM CELL RESEARCH?

While we wait for the Dems to pick up 3 seats in the Senate (or not) it's worth noting that Michael J. Fox's effort to educate Missouri voters that stem cell research is necessary to advance science in order to find cures for Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, spinal cord ailments, and other diseases that affect Americans ... has not been enough.

With 50% of precincts reporting, the NO is winning

Looks like the decisive Senate seat in Virginia is going to the Republicans with 92% of ballots counted. It's very close but the trend hasn't changed since they started counting.

If the Dems don't take Virginia, it might be tough to get a majority in the Senate :rolleyes

Their prospects for the House of Representatives look brighter though. :hat

The senate results could be one of those all night contests.

You bet! Why is it that the world's only super power always has elections that are too close to call?

With only a 1% difference, there is an automatic recount for Virginia. It could be the key to the senate race which means we'll only find out who wins the Senate sometime next week.

Same Sex Marriage bans have been passed in:

South Carolina
Virginia
Tennessee
South Dakota
Wisconsin
Idaho
Colorado (which also voted against Domestic Partnership)

Arizona seems to be the only State in contention not voting to ban Same Sex Marriages. They did vote for English as the official language of the state.

California voted against creating a fund for Alternative Energy research.

... It's incredible how backward thinking America is.

Looking at Virginia (where George Allen continues to lead, despite the many racial slurs) and Tennessee (the TV commercial against the Black Ford with the white playboy girl), I guess racism still wins you elections.
