Looking at this makes me happy, this will be amazing to use ... as is the one close to Y&E ... which is always exteremely popular, much more so after the conversion from a ... drum roll ... muddy / uneven / dead / ... grass field ..

Maybe for specific athletes (field hockey) players it'll be amazing to use, but what about all of the other former users?
Students used to love just hanging out on the grass between classes... tanning, having picnics, chatting with friends, etc... Some people would bring their pets and toss a ball around. Some students used to play casual Frisbee here... or just play catch... and there used to be space to play casual football... and now the space is really only useful for a single purpose.

Such a HUGE space, formerly natural plants, now all synthetic.

AND at such a huge financial cost... why is a university as intellectual as u of t giving up so much land and spending so much money for sports (which advances mankind how?) when the money could go to something actually useful like medical research or other academic uses?

What. A. Waste.

Sports and general fitness are more important to humankind than you are giving them credit for.

Meanwhile, there is quite a bit of other green space at U of T which continues to be available for tanning, having picnics, chatting with friends, etc.

Have you ever tried laying down on artificial turf ! Its actually great, that's what a ton of folks do around here (when there aren't sports). Many times with a grass field that's not possible as its full of mud all times of the year !
