TWRC Port Lands Beautification

The TWRC website indicates port lands beautification which includes a press release for some $10.5 Million in spending to clean up some parts of the port lands. Any idea when these projects will start? They have a dollar sign attached, does this mean TWRC already has the money to start? I hope they start soon.

billonlogan,

From what I recall, these are currently working on detailed design and consturction would begin in late Summer/Early Fall to be ready for Spring 2007.

I've heard that they are re-doing the Martin-Goodman trail by Leslie, along with planting a bunch of new trees.

They're setting up some fairly basic stuff, like planting trees along Leslie, building a tree farm/nursery, etc. Commissioner's Park would be a far more interesting project to keep track of.

The portlands are so vast and degraded that 10.5 Million dollars won't do much but of course better than nothing. I think this is more of a PR move than anything, we all know that it will be at least a decade before any kind of transformative change occurs in the Portlands (well 9 years pending expo decision).

Article: $150M designated this year for waterfront improvement projects

By ROB GRANATSTEIN, CITY HALL BUREAU
Toronto Sun

The money is set to flow like water on the waterfront this year.
The much-maligned remake of the city's southern edge will finally show some signs of life this year as the Toronto Waterfront Redevelopment Corp. expects to plow $150.7 million into the project. That's $18 million more than the cumulative amount the TWRC has spent since its inception in 2001.

"We've had a lot of planning and we're getting to construction now," said the agency's CEO, John Campbell. "The rate of spending will increase dramatically."

Leading the way is construction on the West Don Lands, a $234-million, 20-year redevelopment, in a 32-hectare area bordered by Parliament St., the Don River, King St. and the rail lines.

It will eventually be home to 6,000 new residences, an eight-hectare park, public transit, two child-care centres, an elementary school and a community centre and pool.

The $27-million Western Beaches watercourse is roaring ahead in preparation for the Aug. 10 start of the World Dragon Boat Championships. That project is $4 million over budget.

The TWRC board wanted to make sure Campbell wasn't asking for more money than it could spend.

"That's been a problem for us in the past," he said. "The track record of our initial projects show we have been too ambitious."

Still, TWRC chairman Robert Fung has been pushing for instant results.

In fact, the faster the better.

He was disappointed the sports fields planned for the portlands won't be ready for use this summer.

"They're all highly contaminated," said Karen Pitre, who is overseeing the sports field project for the TWRC.

"We can't just throw some kids on a field and say play.

"We're doing it as fast as we can," Pitre said, adding it's hoped they're ready next year.

The sports fields will be artificial turf on top of a concrete cap that will cover the contaminated fields.

The TWRC is also set to launch a feasibility study for a $20-million recreation centre on the portlands that could be ready for 2009, Pitre said.

Does anybody know where the sport fields and rec centre are located?

Leslie Street Greening Project is underway.

This project will see the realignment of the Martin Goodman Trail which runs along the east side of Leslie Street from Unwin to Lake Shore Boulevard. It will also see the installation of sidewalk on both sides of the street.

The Project is being done in three phases. The first phase, which is now underway, focuses on the East side of Leslie from Lake Shore to Commissioners Street and the west side of Leslie from Commissioners to the ship turning basin.

In the Lakeshore to Commissioner's section the Martin Goodman Trail is being moved to the east and a new side walk is being constructed.

South of Commissioners on the west side of Leslie a new sidewalk is being added. Along with building the new paths and sidewalks the project involved the planting of trees along them.

Future phases of the work, scheduled to be done in 2006 and 2007 will see the Martin Goodman trail shifted further to the East along the whole length from Lakeshore to Unwin, along with a sidewalk and tree plantings.

You can see the plans for the various phases of the project in the Toronto Waterfront Revitilization Corporation's document that was presented to a public meeting in November 2005. TWRC Waterfront Trail improvements (Warning! Big 13MB) . The section on the Leslie Street improvements are on pages 24 to 27.

GregWTravels,

I'll be there with a friend to hear the speeches and to take one of the first tours.

TWRC Port Lands Tour

Met up with MetroMan at Union and caught the bus to the Portlands. Unfortunately, the TTC doesn't drop you off anywhere near the venue and we had to walk the rest of the way.

Upon arrival, we immediately encountered a group of protesters opposed to the proposed Portlands Engery Centre.

Caught one the first bus tours, and surprisingly it was almost full. Again it was filled with same old familair faces from these endless public consultations in Toronto.

The tour itself didn't last long, it stopped at various points and the guide spoke about the initatives. It was nice to finally get a tour of the entire site, however, they should have allowed peple to get off and look around at the site and construction work. I would have loved to get off at Cherry Beach.

Back at the Toronto Hydro Building (which actually had solar panels off it's side), they had displays and consultants explaining the various projects. The Film Studios looks and sounds like it's coming along.

Around noon Mayor David Miller gave a speech on the patio of the building. It was the perfect setting with sun, a patio filled with engaged citizens, the water in the background, and the already cleared site for the proposed power plant in the distance.
