I wonder how much traffic can be funneled into the Crosstown West instead of expanding line 2. Have the 900 and 927 run directly into Martin Grove Station. Split the 45/945 or run half the buses south of Kipling/Eglinton Station. The same can be done for Islington and Royal York. Have 73C via Albion become it's own route. Run the 73 to Albion only. The 73B can become it's own route looping between Royal York and Jane.

If they could get half the current riders to use Line 5 instead, they won't have to expand those Line 2 terminals. That is if Line 5 ever opens.

It will be a drop in the bucket at best. The Line 2 expansion will service all those new towers from Kipling to 427 as well deal with the overcrowding bus terminal that was built undersize in the first place. It would deal with all the deadheading for all systems.

More egregiously, the third of that cluster was 9 minutes early, on a route that runs every 7 minutes! Why operators like this aren't terminated I don't know.

That said, I don't see any terrible gaps until near 6 pm (an 18-minute gap caused by the preceding bus being 12-minutes early).

This is interesting. On our TTC this would be a quick case of NCR followed by release after a some years of institutionalization.

You know absolutely nothing about this case to conclude that the person would be found not criminally responsible. And in any event, that determination is never quick as you need several expert reports and a trial before a judge will make it. I doubt on these facts this person would get bail in Canada. He would probably spend several years in a secure mental health facility being evaluated.

There are definitely questions about whether before this he should have been free to be on the streets. But there's no question he'd be locked up for a long time in Canada, even if he ultimately is found NCR. Vincent Li spent 7 years locked up in a secure mental health facility despite being found NCR in that gruesome murder in Winnipeg.

We only know what was reported, that Brown had a history of mental illness and associated violent outbursts to the point this is mother asked for the state to commit him, combined with homelessness and past multiple convictions. Here in Canada the defence would definitely have a strong case to claim NCR, and Brown would likely avoid jail and enter a mental institution for several years until the system deemed him fit for society. My point was to remark how different this US case is from what we see on the TTC and other transit in Canada, where Brown may well get the death penalty, even though that's supposed to be out of bounds for mentally ill convicts.

Seriously, what possibly still exists at the TTC that can be cut? This whole operation is being held together by thoughts and prayers. Other than management salaries, which will of course never be on the table.

You absolutely cannot say that unless you have seen a report from a doctor. A history of mental illness does not create a defence of NCR. You have to show that in the specific case of the crime, the person was not capable of "appreciating the nature and quality of the act". You can have severe mental illness and not meet that standard, and in fact that happens every day.

I never thought I would be one to say this but; they need to increase fares. Olivia Chow cant keep this fare freeze going on like this, it's been almost 3 years with no additional revenue tools for the TTC.

That and the province needs to get their heads out of the gutter and increase provincial funding levels. It's cute that Doug Ford wants to keep cutting municipality revenue tools, but if he isnt providing funding to cities than what does he want the cities to do? Wave pixie dust and make things happen magically?

Just scrap the kids-ride-free in that case (and/or maybe increase the student/senior fares), and leave the adult fares alone, ty.

Whatever they do, I hope they don't touch the line 2 replacement funding to solve this budget shortfall.

It doesn't help that the TTC has probably been relying on fares from increased ridership that Line 5 will being that always seem like they're within reach and then poof! pushed back. For a half decade now.

That and the province needs to get their heads out of the gutter and increase provincial funding levels. At this point (though unlikely to happen with Liberals or Conservatives in power), Toronto needs to appeal for a federal version of the City of Toronto Act, allowing for autonomy and tax collection outside of the province's jurisdiction. As a longtime Toronto resident, it's getting so frustrating watching cities elsewhere progress, while Toronto regresses, or at best maintains a status quo. We can't grow as a city if the province keeps wanting to treat the city like a noisy child.
