TTC Cartography, Signage, and Wayfinding

What screwed my OCD the most is they show: Yonge, Front, University, Spadina, Allen - but Jane isn't shown!

Thought this would be worthwhile reposting in a more prominent thread:
I’m honestly getting tired of this ”1984”-style renaming of everything. It started with the renaming of LeBreton (Flats) station in Ottawa to Pimisi (dishonouring the history of the fire that destroyed the community), then Dominion to Kichi Sibi. Then on the GO network, Lincolnville got renamed to Old Elm, despite there still being a Lincoln Fields (interchange) station in Ottawa, and a Lincoln station in Vancouver, which didn’t get renamed. Then Dundas. Now we’re going after a new station that was already renamed twice just a decade ago. First to Black Creek Pioneer Village, and then at the behest of Maria Augimeri to Pioneer Village.

I’m all for honouring our Indigenous Peoples, and reconciling their atrocious treatment in the past, but couldn’t we instead strive for a multilingual approach to signage, respective of each distinct group geographically. It would be nice to have English/(French)/Indigenous language signage/announcements. My country pulls this off well with two official languages, and then English in the South, and an Indigenous language in the North.

For the record, I didn’t like it when they renamed Steeles West the first time. We’re now renaming it a third time before ”LightSpell” has ever (properly) been activated, and fare integration for the segment of Line 1 north of Steeles is even in place.

Anyone who’s studied the Bolshevik Revolution should be able to see the similarities here… it’s beyond silly by now.
If we seriously have to rename Pioneer Village again, then Maria Augimeri or her estate should cover the costs from renaming it from Steeles West originally.

One of the biggest challenges is that historical indigenous names don't necessarily map onto places like subway stations particularly easily as how indigenous communities have named certain locations isn’t aligned with the current streetgrid. For individual locations, such as parks, this doesn't necessarily matter as they are something of a one off, but there may not be a unique historical name for the location of each individual station. Honouring territory may prove equally challenging as there is not necessarily consensus among indigenous groups as to which locations fall within each community’s territory; multiple communities may have valid claims that a location falls within their traditional lands, and it would be problematic for a government agency to attempt to make a appropriate determination.

Even if the indigenous communities were asked to create a new name for station or series of stations, both issues still remain and in either case are not likely to be as widely recognized as whatever street names are currently in use so from a navigation perspective. So tl;dr I don't think its in anyone’s interest to try and solve this without multiple indigenous perspectives informing the outcome.

Also I think we need to brush up on our Orwell.

Who's saying we do?
Might stem from an article in the toronto sun last year when they obtained internal TTC emails that mentioned creating policies to rename certain stations, like Pioneer Village, but that same article includes,

“In an emailed statement, TTC spokesman Stuart Green confirmed the transit authority finalized a renaming policy in June, but added “nothing is currently being planned” in terms of future station changes.”

Reads to me like TTC staff have created a plan in case there is a push in the future from a Mayor or the board to rename stations given that there’s a political aspect to the TTC. Seems like a no-brainer thing staff would do to be prepared.

I really wish we could have the regional rail lines partially on this map too. I know some of the x-town stations have them.
I'm not sure how they'd fit. Even the strip maps for the lines other than 2 seems like overkill.

I'm also not sure the point, with the maps on the train walls being the best place for these - the ones that include the streetcar lines.

I find that Montreal does this well.
Montreal didn't used to have any maps over the doors. Did they add them?

The Montreal map on the train walls has always been a classic!
