TTC Boycott: Facebook activism

After looking at the employee to rider ratios across North America, this is one of the more baseless things to criticize the TTC for:

From lowest to highest:
*Miami - 348,000 riders - 4,000 staff - 87 riders per employee
*Atlanta - 488,000 riders - 4,729 staff - 103 riders per employee
*Philly - 1,073,000 riders - 9,000 staff - 119 riders per employee
*Chicago - 1,671,000 riders - 11,000 staff - 152 riders per employee
*Los Angeles - 1,490,000 riders - 9,200 staff- 162 riders per employee
*NYC - 11,575,000 riders - 70,000 staff - 165 riders per employee
*Boston - 1,235,500 riders - 6,346 staff - 195 riders per employee
*Toronto - 2,493,000 riders - 11,300 staff - 221 riders per employee

The ridership numbers are all from the the APTA daily rider stats and should be an accurate comparison of systems. The employee numbers are from the agencys' Wikipedia pages.
Thanks Simon. This puts it in perspective.

Why don't we compare against some mid size European systems for a good idea of scale and efficiency? I don't know if its fair to compare Toronto to Miami, Atlanta and Philly.

I dont think we can compare ourselves with Europe, We are no where near as dense aas Europe. The only place that makes sense to compare is the United States. Sadly we are not as built up as NEw York. But are more like LA. Because of this our transit suffers.

Not sure where these facebook protesters get this " TTC is the most expensive transit in the world" Look other cities in ontario.

Brampton transit $3
Mississauga transit $3
Ottawa transit $3
York Region Transit \ VIVA 3.25!!

We are talking labour efficiency here not density. It's already been shown that Berlin operates significantly more transit systems than Toronto for a workforce that's only 2% bigger. We aren't even talking about how much ridership is generated. Surely a subway car and a bus take the the same amount of personnel to operate in Toronto or some European city.

Also worth noting is these lists will not include outsourced work. TTC, for example, does its own warranty repairs (to save time and transporting the bus) and gets reimbursed by the manufacturer. The number of staff in total is the same but in this case they appear as TTC staff instead of as Bombardier staff.

TTC fares are higher than the 905 systems if you consider the cost of tickets and passes, and the discounts offered to secondary and post-secondary students in the 905 which are not offered in Toronto. The 905 systems also have time-based transfer, which allows more than one ride per fare.

But of course, the TTC passes have more value because the weekend service in the 905 is almost unusable.
