Trees Plants flowers and shrubs in Toronto, a green future?

Re: Trees Plants flowers and shrubs in Toronto, a green futu

Toronto is a green city I agree. I think thats one reason our inner city always stayed strong, is because our city never feels like it is to overcrowded and not green.

That being said, we have to protect what we have. The trees are not going to stay there if we don't take care of our urban forest, and protect it.

I have been to a number of North American cities, and I still don't think there is a city that mixes so much nature in like Toronto does.

No other city has wilderness nature areas so close to downtown, etc the way we do.

So lets do what we can to protect what we have, and make it better.

And above all else, enjoy our green space. Actually I am on my way out now to go walking with my friend in the ravine trail near my house.

Enjoy our natural assets.

^Bizzare. Its something mike would say, but clear, coherent and structured. Is it a new and improved mike? Or a hacker with no life who is spending way too much time trying to mimic mike and assume his identity? Strange.

I like trees as much as the next work, but I really think we have enough parks. I live right across from High Park and I probably go in there twice a year, at most!

Umm...that sounds like Mike to me.

I still want to see more trees downtown. For example, right here on Front street there could be lovely trees all along the wide sidewalk.

The biggest problem I have with recent tree-plantings is that they never seem to grow to be particularly impressive-looking trees.

I don't think the issue is as much about parks as it is about green areas, or the integration of plant life. We were all sadly treated to last year's famous "beheadings" of numerous trees around downtown. Those trees and other plant life do add to the overall appearance of the streets. It is a shame when an asset like that is left to decay or die.

As for more street greening, roof greening and public art, I say bring it on.

Nice pics MikeToronto!

It really makes areas look like paradise, beautiful gardens multiply in T.O. means a healthy city.

I agree. Toronto may be a very green city overall, but the downtown core could use more green. I'd also like to see improvements in the maintenance and appearance of our parks rather than getting new ones.

Those are some good points Esplanade

the only problem is that dundas is far from being an amazing European square (nah really?)

maybe flowers instead of more trees , sounds good

better design some how? Something is missing.

Re: Trees Plants flowers and shrubs in Toronto, a green futu

I didn't mean Dundas square was a great square, I just meant that Toronto could use a few good, or even, dare I say it, great squares. Dundas Square is lacking something, I don't know if it's art or a soul. We need a bit of diversity, public squares, and parks. There are parts of Toronto that could use more parks, with trees, of course, but a few European type squares would be nice too. What ever happened to the square they were supposed to build beside Queens Quay Terminal? Didn't the federal government promise a square there? PROMISES! PROMISES! We need more gardens, with flowers and colour. We also need some creative thinking, to come up with more original designs for parks and gardens. Themed parks would be good. I'd love to see the Don River revine turned into a real park, that people actually used. That area is a bit scruffy. The river could use some work too. It would be great to make it a major river or canal, like the one in Ottawa. People could actually use it for boating and skating in the winter. I know, I ask for too much. lol The Native park , with Native art was a good idea, wouldn't you Torontonians agree?

Re: Trees Plants flowers and shrubs in Toronto, a green futu

Right from the get-go Dundas Square was well used by ordinary Torontonians. Sure, Lisa Rochon and the Beautiful People who wanted Great Squares turned their noses up at it, but so what? It works. People sit there with friends and chat, or sit and read, or people watch, or let their kids run through the fountains, and buy stuff at the market, and go to events there. We have such a wide variety of public gardens, squares, large parks and small parks in the city that there is surely something for everyone - everything from that messy little urban park at Logan and Danforth, or that small quiet park tucked in behind some condos on the east side of Bay, around College/Wellesley, to Cloud Gardens, to the formal park at King and Jarvis. They're everywhere.

Re: Trees Plants flowers and shrubs in Toronto, a green futu

meh, i'm pretty ambivalent about most of our parks and fountains and squares. Most other cities (cities in Toronto's league, at least) do a far better job at this than we do - this is a gross generalization but you know what I'm getting at! I put it all down to the overall neglect of the past 20/30 years. We could definately raise the bar higher!!

Re: Trees Plants flowers and shrubs in Toronto, a green futu

The Dundas Square fountains came on today and people are starting to gather and meet for lunch etc. It's interesting how much it transforms when the weather improves.

Re: Trees Plants flowers and shrubs in Toronto, a green futu

Loved the Latin music band in the square this afternoon. They really added to the atmosphere of the square (much more than whatever bagpipe player or guy beating on plastic drums outside the Eaton Centre). The band should be a fixture all summer at Dundas Square.

Re: Trees Plants flowers and shrubs in Toronto, a green futu

We can complain about Dundas Square all we want. But the point is that it still works.

Actually just in one week my co-worker and even my sister brought up Dundas Square in conversations and talked about how much they enjoy it. My co-worker use to avoid Yonge-Dundas at all costs, because she considered it the "tourist" district. However she was saying how much she is drawn to Dundas Square and even goes down with her daughter on summer nights to hear music, enjoy the fountains, etc.

It may not be a Square St Louis like in Montreal. But Dundas Square works.
