No ... it would be from Toronto to Detroit. That's exactlyt the corridor VIA was studying at one point for high speed rail.

Great. An opportunity for the NIMBYs to hold not just the GTA but half the population of Canada hostage.

Will see.....so if there is...then what?

why would they route it that way? wouldn't a HSRL from toronto to montreal start at union station and go east along the same route as lakeshore east?

that statement makes somewhat more sense.

I think the point being if it headed out to Detroit or something like that. Also, we might want to consider starting the line at Pearson instead of Union.

There would be NO ARL, meaning the GO Train would service the route and Weston. The GO Train would eliminate the need for the ARL.
Its not just about Weston, its about the entire corridor and affected communities.

Electrify the line.

How so?

An ARL serves a completely different market segment compared to GO. Unless GO begins to offer a new service level, meaning express trains from the airport to Union, this would still be an ARL regardless of how you dress it. Why should that type of service be forced to stop in Weston when that is not the market it is meant to serve. Standard GO service can adequately serve Weston.

It's all about Weston and it's clear. Take a look at the subway proposal that WCC brought forward.

I doubt it - by the time that VIA gets to that point, there won't be any capacity left on any route into Toronto, and they'll have to tunnel similiar to the HS1 line into St. Pancras ... but we're talking decades away here ... by then the Westonites will be protesting the nuclear generators on the trains ...

at the very least, they should look at trenching both the CP tracks and CN/GO tracks and restore lawrence avenue west to grade and have the tracks pass underneath it. if they're going to build a trench, they might as well use it to eliminate the underpass which is so very close. also, build it in a way to allow the possibility of future decking over and electrification.

^ That's a sensible and fair suggestion. Too bad the WCC probably would not accept it.

you can't blame them though. their demands such as electrification, more stops and a lower fare via a public not private service are not that bad. with all those tracks and a proper setup of switching they can probably run a express (with premium fare) plus a local service with stops at major arteries (with an every day affordable fare) from union to the airport and make everybody happy. electrification would probably solve alot of noise issues and decking over would allow for the reclamation of space which could be used for public use such as parkland and a trail as someone suggested in this thread.

You have to be carefull how much you cover as there will be fumes to worry about as CP/CN/VIA and GO Long haul trains passing Georgetown will still be deisel.

You have the milk run that stops at every station using 3 car EMU.

You have a limit express that stops at every othere or two station using a 5 car EMU.

Mid express stopping at today station using 10 car EMU.

Long Haul express going to KW/Woodstock as 12 car desiel.

The milk run riders can transfer at a station where express stop to get to where they want to go faster.

I have already said that an trench under Lawrence Ave would reclaim unused land that can be use for almost anything.

Cost for electrification of the Georgetown line is $375 million for overhead.

The captial cost of EMU's is between $3.5-$4.5 a car depending if it a single or DD. Each car would be power so it would help if one car die along the route.

You need to build a yard for EMU's and that will be around $300 million.

Time lag to order EMU's is 2-3 years and well within the time line once overhead start going up to be ready for service.

The existing fleet would move to other lines until retirement or sold off to recover some of the capital cost.

You run EMU's to the airport and that would not happen for at least 5 years.

As for the trench, that about $500 million and would required closing Lawrence Ave down for 6 months. At the same time, GO/VIA/CP would share tracks as the west side of the trench is built. They would move to the west side to allow the east side to be built.

I would built the west section from either end up to Lawrence Ave and once both section are completed, close Lawrence to connect the 2 section. Move the tracks and start on the east section to get Lawrence reopen ASP. This would be a 7/24 project.

The trench would be 90% open as the cost to ventulate a tunnel is too high.

I have trains arriving/departing Union every 75 seconds just for the Georgetown/Milton/Airport line using 10,15,20 minutes service. You drop that by 5 minutes, 45 seconds headway. Still got to add in the Barrie train and the Lakeshore as well VIA and that some operation headacke

I hope someone starts a 'stop the WCC' group. I am willing to bet that it would outnumber this page here.

While there are those who might *passively* feel the WCC is full of it, I don't know whether those who'd *actively* be part of an anti-WCC group is that sizeable. Indeed, it'd probably be too populated by an James Alcocky "anti-socialist-mayor-Miller" contingent for comfort...

Might I also add. Any potential future Bolton GO service would pass right through my neighbourhood, likely meaning, that a stop will be minutes from my door. Now not that I plan on being in the area long enough to see it come to life, it is still nice to know that this area will eventually have GO service.

The way I see it WCC is blocking this part of the GTA from getting improved transit in the form of GO trains. So tell my why do the rights of WCC matter more than my rights and the rights of my neighbours to having access to a regional rail network?
