I doubt the people living nearby would like a larger U shaped building. Point towers at least permit views around them, and generally have less of a shadowing impact.

Despite the fact that this project has been in development since Methuselah was born, it's shaping up really nicely. I'm excited to see how the staggered balconies accentuate the finished product.
 
I don't know who Methuselah is, but he sounds pretty old and I'd have to agree that despite how long this project has taken it's sprouting up quite nicely. I'm pretty triple super pumped about spec'ing this baby out from Robarts and from west campus generally.
 
Walked by, wow the townhomes fronting Uoft would be amazing to live in (i.e. south / west end of the site) - its a really quiet part of UofT as well, great architecture
