Wow.. aA managed to do a mechanical box well...

aA has a great track record for rooflines: Spire, 18 Yorkville, Ice and Market Wharf, for instance.

I've always thought 18 Yorkville was awful, the top of Spire is nothing special, Ice is good, Market Wharf is okay but not great, the two new Distillery ones are okay but not great and ones like X, Four Seasons, Casa and Pure Spirit have terrible mechanical boxes.

aA, despite creating a lot of very safe and not-very-exciting buildings, usually designs somewhat quality at least. Their mechanical boxes have always been their Achilles heel.

Most of aA's rooflines are fine. Casa has that thin slab that concludes the facade like a cornice. Four Seasons has the fins which give the appearance of a single pane of glass from top to bottom. X was unfortunate for the generic box, and the two recent Distillery District towers are clumsy. Besides those, aA's designs are impressive like Ice or at least on the level.

That along with X & the distillery would be there worst. But they did redeem themselves with the roofline across the street. Agreed that there's nothing wrong with Four Season mech, it's quite seamless. Though I never liked Casa's roofline, but that's more a mater of personal taste.
Anyways as with most things, I think the truth lies somewhere in between.

can someone explain to an engineering/architecture noob why these mechanical boxes always have to sit awkwardly on top of the structure instead of being seamlessly built into the form of the building?
