That takes the whole meaning of "moving out but still live across from parents" Instead this could be either downstairs or upstairs in the hi rise setting.

My neighbours built a laneway house where their garage was, for their daughter to live in. I have another friend who sold their downtown house and built a family compound.

I worked with a friend to build a laneway house in her backyard. My family is going to live in it until my kid is university age, then we’re going to turn it over to her to retire in, so her kids can live in her main house. Gotta be creative these days!
