I'm in no way saying the current iteration is better, and I agree that folks can't 'wow' with things they have no intention of actually doing or are not constructable. Menkes magic trick across the street being perhaps the prime example of this bullshit bait-and-switch.

What do you mean 'attitude'? It's not about expense, wood as a material fundamentally doesn't work in the way the imagineers at Adjaye were implying it would in their pretty pictures. It was and is completely unbuildable as earlier depicted.

I don't think anybody was married to the idea of a massive structural wood cantilever, if that's what you're referring to. Speaking for myself, I was excited by the outward expression of the design: the warm, wood or wood-like cladding; the inclusion of greenery in the building facade; the way public space at ground level wove underneath the building (which could be accomplished in far less structurally daring ways, without large cantilevers); and the boldness of a three-block long building with a unified, deliberate architectural expression. Any one of these things might have had to give as a result of a reasonable value engineering process, but that isn't what happened. Instead of value engineering, we've been given a new design which bears no resemblance to the previous one and preserves absolutely none of its positive features. When I refer to "attitude," I mean the implication that we're all idiots for being upset by this.

From 2017, would th is have been better?

The metal pipesl ike:

are for pumping out groundwater so they can actually excavate. SE: Dewatering https://www.aquatechdewatering.com/ ) The blue plastic pipes are probably to replace/divert active water supply pipes. Though I do not see any, there may be green ones too, they are sewers.

The open house was pretty cool, with at least a couple of hundred people there. Nice meeting @DSCToronto as well. Had a gut feeling some other UT people were there as well.

It was pretty marketing heavy. Made me realize that participating in the UT forums gives me a lot of more granular detail on these city projects.

What's the same - Design Excellence.

Still hawking transit that's not happening in the next decade...
In fairness, they were the most positive about the transit that I have ever seen them. That said, I would be happier if the design of the TTC Segment (Union to QQ) was much more advanced. They remain at 30% while Segments 2 & 3 are much further along.

Just once I’d like to see a progressive transit oriented politician/leader pull a Trump - give everyone middle fingers and say I’m building this damn thing now, I’m emptying the coffers into it, I don’t care if I’m a one termer. Hell, pull a Daley and bulldoze the Gardiner overnight.

I want a city minded, transit brained progressive who dgaf and chooses to use his bullying powers for good instead of cancelling people for bs.

On another note, where is Quayside in the rankings for concentrated rental in the city? Cherry house, Maple House, Quayside are all in the area- but it seems like Maple House hasn’t been that affordable and still has plenty of empty units. It’s kind of the “build it and they will come mentality” I wish we took with transit.

Maple House is definitely not affordable. Example: Their 1 bedrooms start at just over $2,300/mo and go all the way up to $2,700/mo. They are pretty generic units.

I have been keeping an eye on their pricing and there has been very little change.

From what I can see, there are over 30 vacancies that are publically showing but if they are anything like my landlord, there are more but they don't want it to appear that way.

I talked to one couple at the coffee shop by the King Street loop there. They were pretty blunt: Nice/clean building. Noisy transit. Above provincial guideline rent increases. Too far from [practically] everything.

I suspect they moved out as well as I do not see them at the coffee shop anymore.

They were definitely more enthusiastic and energetic on stage. Not the usual dry webinar talk I am accustomed to from them.

To echo the above re: the QQE LRT, they stated that 60% design would be complete July 2026, with construction starting in 2026 (I think? maybe misremembering that part) and service starting "early 2030s". They certainly seemed to hint that government funding was coming in 2026 during the presentation, and I also talked to a WT employee and they were coy but seemed to agree. They also said some of the work going on for Quayside infrastructure right now actually has work for the QQE LRT being done as well, so that it doesn't need to be torn up again.

The work going on now at QQE and Small Street (See @GameOnBrad photos above) is (partly) for the LRT as it will provide source of traction power. See: https://secure.toronto.ca/council/agenda-item.do?item=2025.EX25.3 The work on Cherry and Commissioners saw the transit bridge built over the Keating and the empty ROW for the streetcars on east side of Cherry and the south side of Commissioners. WT are certainly trying to avoid having to dig up anything again for LRT.
