^^^ Well, the top of the new addition aligns with the top of the stone portion of the heritage property. A couple of other datum lines match up too. Also, the heaviness may diminish when all the bits and pieces are in place and the thing is lit up from within and without.

But I think the obvious visual cue is the cornice sitting above the large 2nd floor windows of the heritage building. Whether going with one floor w/very high ceilings or matching the profile of the heritage building floors, that's where I would have liked to see a relationship visually; particularly if there's going to be roughly uniform streetwall/setback.
If the new building were set back a bit, it would be less jarring.
I don't mind the black or the building being in a modern style.
But I would like to see it make an effort to feel like a thoughtful, complimentary contrast.
