There is something I find peculiar about Biidaasige Park. I had 3 different people in the last week, and one this morning, ask me if I knew if there were places to lock up their bike near the park (before they got there). I said yes and then had to explain where they were.

So, I went and checked the maps of the park. They have no information on their maps for it. To be fair, some of these bike posts were not installed yet before the maps were displayed on site but I think it would be helpful if they added info like that.

Don't mind me but I'm creatively frustrated today so I thought this would be cool.

Anyway, carry on. It's a beautiful day today.

This is a good idea, and I think it could be applied in other Toronto Parks as well.

I'd say mention it to Parks.......... LOL......

But maybe send it the Mayor's office instead.

I should add... they turned off the water for the play features and fountains/bottle fillers, seemingly on Nov. 3. You'd think that with a signature new park, they'd find ways to keep the water on until at least the weather gets bad. But the bathroom trailers were well-appreciated.

In fairness, if you are responsible for avoiding freezing and burst pipes you need to set a date and stick to it. You really can't decide (today for example) that it may freeze tonight and do it on the spur of the moment. Most washrooms can be protected/heated, I doubt drinking fountains or play structures can be - at an acceptable cost.

True, and I guess the joke is on me since we got this huge snowfall this weekend. But I've read that it's the earliest large snowfall in Toronto since 1981.

I also think that if the city wanted to commit itself to the goal of keeping a few of its signature parks functioning until later in the year, they can assign someone to look at weather forecasts and decide on the spur of the moment for those few places.

And @evandyk

There's a media piece on this from 2023 looking at the idea of operating drinking fountain year round in Toronto; in includes engineering students who considered the issue, as well as a manufacturer.

The short answer here, is for wall-mounted fountain on the outside of heated/insulated buildings (washrooms, community centres) its very feasible and the cost ......while material would not shock. It could be worth considering in places that get high volumes of people in winter such as skating rinks, where they have washrooms or change rooms. Though, in such cases, it might make more sense to have an indoor vestibule.

For freestanding fountains.........freeze-resistant models are available, but the existing models are not; and above and beyond capital costs, they are more involved to maintain.

That said, I can find freestanding, outdoor models this catalogue that are freeze resistant from $3,329, though, that'one is a really ick colour!

* just because the fountain is freeze resistant doesn't mean its supply line is; but that is feasible. The cost wouldn't be terrible, in most cases, but it certainly adds something in some cases.

Interesting article.

The park just opened this year to much fanfare, and I think the city could do more to keep it operational for a bit longer into the fall, particularly since one of the key aspects of the play area is the water feature. There were field trips from three different schools there last Tuesday, so clearly people are still out trying to enjoy the park.

Well you did say that Parks Toronto is sitting on a mountain of cash - now we just need a strategy to get me into a decision making position...
