Toronto One Bloor West | 308.6m | 85s | Tridel | Foster + Partners

Well good thing they only had to put up I beams to do it and didn't have to pour concrete, otherwise it probably would have taken them a couple more months. 🥴

In any case as they say; it may have won the battle, but ultimately it will lose the war. 😼
They still left the lifting lug on the beam. Maybe it’s temporary and will be removed pending other work in the area.

I said several times that there is no race here. Nice to have a supertall in Canada now. :D

Yep and a future landmark. This thing is an eye catcher, last week i was working in the area at Yonge St & Bloor, and every time i stopped to look up at it, I noticed other people took notice of this monster too. I heard some guys near me at the crosswalk, maybe tourists or just clueless locals, wondering if this was an office building or condo? I told them what it was. They were just as impressed by the building as us skyscraper nerds.

It’s surprising to us that even locals often have no idea about buildings we get excited about. Goes to show just how small our bubble is. A few weeks ago, I saw a Facebook post (feed, not from someone I know) on 1 Yonge. One of the commenters actually said ‘do people really care about skyscrapers?’ LOL.

To be clear, this was for those who did think it was some kind of competition, which is fine. Not for those who didn't think it was, which is fine also. 😸

Just so it's absolutely clear... here's the excerpt from Tridel's Official Press Release

One Bloor West is officially Canada’s first supertall building (a label reserved for buildings above 300 metres), becoming the latest and most striking addition to Toronto’s skyline in over a generation. This will make it the tallest residential building in the country to date and the second tallest man-made structure, next to the CN Tower. Once complete, One Bloor West will stand at 308.6 metres — or 85 storeys.

A remarkable feat of engineering and vertical scale, One Bloor West reflects Toronto’s rapid urban evolution while showcasing what’s possible when vision, innovation, and dedication come together, One Bloor West is both a celebration of form and height, setting a new benchmark for urban development in Canada. Construction continues to progress steadily, with major structural milestones now complete and interior work soon to advance across multiple levels.

“As the first supertall in the country, One Bloor West marks a pivotal moment not just for Toronto, but all of Canada,” said Jim Ritchie, President and CEO of Tridel. “We are moving into a new era of development, marked by a level of ambition and engineering excellence not previously seen before. We’re proud to be part of the team delivering a new landmark to Toronto’s skyline and look forward to future buildings joining One Bloor West’s supertall status.”

No doubt is the first supertall in Canada. But "this will make it the tallest residential building in the country to date and the second tallest man-made structure, next to the CN Tower" is a rather strange statement. Why use the future tense when it ALREADY is both of these things (by surpassing FCP)? And yet when it's completed and occupied, it will be none of these (surpassed by Sky Tower).

Tallest man-made structure in Canada? Or in Toronto? Because the chimney in Sudbury is like 380 metres tall...
They're taking it down...

Vale claimed it was costing them too much money to maintain, and they seemingly saw no historical value in preserving the country’s second-tallest freestanding structure. Demolition may have already begun-it was scheduled to start this summer. Tridel's statement might have taken that into consideration.

So they're eliminating the competition. And replacing with cleaner air technologies. All good, IMO.

So FCP at 298 metres is only 2 metres short of 'supertall' status?

And after 50 years as the king, One Bloor West only just beats FCP by a mere 10 meters?

And One Bloor West will only hold the tallest building in Canada status for a few months before One Yonge passes it?

Huh.
It's been well documented that FCP is closer to 291 metres elsewhere on this board. Nobody can confirm where the 298m number came from, but it doesn't appear to be correct.

So One Bloor W is about 17m taller than FCP, and it also sits at a grade which is about 32m higher up than FCP, so on the skyline it will look substantially taller, closer to 50m taller.
