Apart from Babcock, I think Dubas also holds a fair amount of responsibility in team building.

That's true as well. Dubas somewhat overpaid for players and as controversial as it is I wouldn't be too concerned if Marner or Nylander along with other dead weight got traded. Yes they are good players but there is so much more than can be done with that money.

There's a very good chance the Leafs would win the Stanley Cup before 2075 (future expansion teams (even additional Toronto-based NHL teams) will make this feat mathematically harder). If not, then they would be worse than the Chicago Cubs, which took 108 years to win their next World Series.

Babcock fired, as expected. Fans needed some blood

Not surprised. He is an old school coach with an old school mentality focused on the process and grinding through problems. That does not work very well and doing the same thing over and over again only to expect a different result is the definition of insanity.

They could not afford to let Babcock turn into another Horachek, not with the team they have now.

I'm always a bit confused when it comes to coach firings - what metrics were used to determine that the team's lousy performance is the result of his coaching? What if the players just aren't good enough?

That's true but at the same time coaches have their own style. Sometimes one style of coaching is better than another.

That said I do believe Dubas effed up by paying Marner, Taveres, Nylander and Matthews so much money. They are overpaid by a long shot.

TORONTO -- A Zamboni driver who was forced onto the ice as an emergency backup goalie for the Carolina Hurricanes made eight saves to help carry the team to victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in a dramatic turn of events.

David Ayres, who works as a Zamboni driver for the Toronto Marlies, was serving as the emergency goalie for Saturday night’s NHL game between the Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs in Toronto.

Ayres, a 42 year old from Whitby, Ont., stepped onto the ice in Toronto Marlies gear and a Hurricanes jersey after Hurricanes goalies James Reimer and Petr Mrazek were injured during the game.

This was a farce. The league needs to rework the rules for emergency backups.

Years ago Johnny Bower almost came back in net as an emergency backup. Now stuff like that isn't possible because of league rules.

In some other sports, it would be a forfeit if there aren't any available players to fill in.

If baseball had random stadium employees pitching in relief during extra innings, it would be rather difficult to take seriously.
