Is this the worst park in Toronto?

Toronto's recent history on building parks is sterling. Faced with the reality of a rapidly intensifying city, architects and planners have come up with novel solutions to the lack of space available for recreational use. But we don't always get it right. In fact, sometimes we blow it altogether.

Such is the case at Lisgar Park, the gravel yard just off West Queen West that feigns at being a green space. What's perhaps most troubling about this anemic public space is that there was so much hope when it was first dreamed up.

Very very poor quality park, and full of mishmash design elements and just poorly executed details.

Sadly, the design result is more akin to those produced by someone with very little experience in the field - not someone who is trained and has a number of years under his belt.

Besides many of the trees dying prematurely, the concrete curbs around some of the trees open out to the street, allowing whatever mulch, dirt etc. to slowly fall out and become a barren spot.

Happily, we are starting to produce better executed and designed parks - look at Grange and Berczy! Alas, we still have a long way to go.

Looks like Phase 2 has (finally!) started - at least the part where the park will go up to the north side of EDGE.

Edit: the parking lot is now closed off, so both remaining sections of the park will start soon!

On a related note, construction for traffic signals at the Queen/Abell intersection is underway.

Nice one! I hadn't realized new signals there were in the plans, but they're sorely needed -- there is always a throng of people waiting to cross at exactly that spot.

It's certainty needed. Considering there is a grocery store on Northcote and a streetcar stop at Beaconsfield, there is a significant volume of mid-block crossings to access these destinations from the newish condos on the south side of Queen.

Today; pretty big dig for a park - I'd say they're at least 3m down right now...
