A nudge to Brampton?

Several sections should be underground IMO, if possible. Hurontario between the QEW and the 403 is a zoo, very pedestrian unsafe. The Cooksville section ought to be grade separated, likewise around the Square One area and the crossings of both those highways. And further afield, the crossings of Hwy 401, Hwy 407 and at the Brampton Gateway terminal itself.

And even if the tunnel has to bored deep i.e. beneath Etobicoke Creek, the section north of Elgin in Brampton needs to go straight up Main St underground.

Even if all this adds $1 billion to the total cost it will still have been money well spent.
 
Hurontario is loosing a lane of traffic in both direction and is narrow in Port Credit.

Because Lakeshore is a busy 4/5 lane road with business wanting the use of the curb lane during the summer months and special events, there is no room for an ROW on it. The ward councilor, BIA and residents want the LRT underground east and west of Hurontario. The west side LRT would surface around Mississauga Rd and service the new development on Imperial Oil land and that is as far the LRT will go west since it would be overkill going to Clarkson. Going east is unknown at this time and why there is a Transportation Study underway for the full length of Lakeshore in Mississauga.

With the station now to be underground, it will have an impact on the RFP since plans will not be ready until 2018 and could not be ready when the tender close.

I am assuming Mississauga will be picking up the full cost of the tunnel less the cost of the surface station as its not in Metrolinx budget. Could try to get the Feds to fund some or all of the extra cost, but not expecting it to happen.

Not going to see any grade separation since the goal is to make the street more pedestrian friendly and reduce traffic.
 
I wonder if the added costs and "what changes next?" will turn the entire HUR LRT into an election issue both provincially and municipally in 2018.

If Brampton had (or does) taken the straight up Main to GO station option, those same issues would have cropped up.

Yep, City has committed $26.6MM for this and other upgrades.

And from that report, here's how that number was calculated, according to City staff:

"A list of project enhancements above and beyond the base project scope has been identified for inclusion with the delivery of the projected works. Council is being requested to endorse the list of corridor enhancements identified and the final funding total as negotiated with Metrolinx of $37,207,400. It is proposed that the $10,600,000 Public Realm Amount provided by Metrolinx through the HuLRT Project be used to partially fund these priorities, with the remaining $26,607,400 to be funded through the City’s Capital program; $25,000,000 has been previously identified in the 2017-2026 Capital Budget and Forecast for the HuLRT Project, and Council is being requested to endorse the inclusion of the additional $1,607,400 in the 2018-2027 Capital Budget and Forecast."

Further details: "As part of Metrolinx’s HuLRT process, a portion of the capital construction costs for the project is dedicated back to the municipality in the form of a Public Realm Amount (PRA), in exchange for the impact on the municipal right-of-way that will result from the planning, design and construction of the HuLRT. The PRA is to be used exclusively by the municipality for corridor enhancements and in the case of the HuLRT represents $10,600,000 worth of funding for the City of Mississauga. As identified previously, the 2017-2026 Capital Budget and Forecast identified an interim amount of $25,000,000 for the HuLRT Project related to implementation and associated construction between 2018 and 2022."

Good thing they make their own Municipal decisions with that extra cost they would be losing stops in a hurry with this type of news in the City of Toronto.

I wonder if the added costs and "what changes next?" will turn the entire HUR LRT into an election issue both provincially and municipally in 2018.

It makes sense to bury this portion of the line. I doubt there will be too much opposition in Mississauga

Mississauga realizes the density in Port Credit warrants an underground/separated stretch of their LRT. Take a look at Port Credit some time -- do you see anything that dense, or with a neighbourhood character, in your neck of the woods? Density matters. Or did you conveniently ignore that inconvenient truth again?

(Of course your pet project was originally accepted to be grade separated--and fully funded--but your Subways Subways Subways champion had to screw it all up.)

If you read Drum's reply to my post, the decision to bury the station has to do with road capacity not population density.

So Brampton is looking at a $13MM tunnel and saying $1.4MM is for sure there from the LRT budget.... have requested (but not received confirmation that they'll get it) $4MM refund on the EA...and that would be the city's contribution towards the tunnel? So the tunnel is subject to ML saying "sure, we will put $8.6MM into the tunnel on top of agreeing to give you $4MM back on the EA?

So, Brampton is trying to get the tunnel for free.

One idea I had was not build the tunnel....but, instead, build scramble crossings from each of the 4 corners at Hurontario and Steeles.....the scramble crossing would be activated by the LRT in the station....so when an LRT "flipped the switch" all vehicles would be on a red (full red...no turns allowed) and anyone at any corner would be given a 90 second (or whatever time was deemed appropriate given distance) to cross to or from the LRT......sure would be cheaper and would make the crossing as safe as a tunnel would.
